I love it when the leaves start to change around Swan Pond in Riverside, IL, in the fall. These natural trails go through a drastic change throughout the seasons, from flooding swampland to wild prairie grasses. Around the middle of October through early November, the leaves around the trails of Swam Pond in Riverside start to turn yellow and red, and the prairie grasses blow golden. When the evening light starts to come out, I sometimes have to stop and hold my breath as I seriously love this place for walks with my children and for family photography.

This location has easy parking and is also very accessible for all ages, making it a great spot for an extended family session. I often encourage families who are interested in shooting here to plan accordingly, as the light is going to be ideal right around dinner time. There are LOTS of great local places to eat and have dessert within walking distance, so I would recommend either pre-gaming with heavy snacks and then having dinner after your session, or fit in a full meal beforehand and then saving dessert (a possible incentive) for after our time together. Either way, you want your kids (and yourselves as parents) not to be distracted by their hunger, but to be able to enter fully into the moment with you as a family, and to get lost in the beauty and wonder of this idyllic location.
